CEO's new job will be overseeing global public policy at Netflix, according to media report

Dean Garfield will step down as CEO of the $14 million-revenue Information Technology Industry Council in February, ending a nine-year career at the technology-focused group.

Garfield is stepping down to accept a position at online streaming service Netflix overseeing global public policy, according to the news site Politico, citing anonymous sources. CEO Update was not able to confirm the report.

ITI said in a statement Garfield was leaving to "start the next chapter of his career." He will spend his remaining months at the association assisting in the search for a new CEO. ITI's members include technology and internet giants such as Amazon, Google, Facebook and Microsoft.

"While I am excited about what's to come, my immediate focus is on ensuring a smooth transition at ITI that will make the next decade even more successful than the last," Garfield said in a statement.

Garfield joined ITI as CEO in 2009. He previously was executive vice president and chief strategic officer for the Motion Picture Association of America. He also was vice president of legal affairs at the Recording Industry Association of America. He nearly became executive director of the National Basketball Players Association in 2014, having been one of three finalists for the job.

Garfield has a law degree from New York University and a master's degree in international affairs and public administration from Princeton University. He received $874,029 in compensation at ITI in 2017, according to tax records.

ITI has not announced details about its search for a new CEO.
